Organization Overview
TU Berlin can proudly look back upon a more than 200-year-old tradition of preeminence in scientific and engineering training. Today, with over 34,000 students, seven schools and more than 120 study programs, TU Berlin is one of the largest Universities of Technology in Germany and offers a wide range of subjects. TU Berlin is also a member of the TU 9 Consortium of German Institutes of Technology, a group of nine traditional German universities with an excellent reputation in the fields of engineering, technology and natural sciences. The university will continue to attach a high level of importance to international cooperations as well as close contact to industry and commerce. In July 2019, together with the Freie Universität Berlin, Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin, and Charité – Universitätsmedizin Berlin the TU Berlin was awarded the Universities of Excellence funding line of the German federal and state governments’ Excellence Strategy. 

Intern Responsibilities:

Finding, implementing and testing solution heuristics an NP hard MILP Scheduling Problem
The IIP intern will join the production and operations department to work on energy aware production planning and solution heuristics for an NP hard MILP scheduling problem. Germany's energy transition ("Energiewende") leads to an increasing share of renewable but volatile electricity generation. To sustain network stability under fluctuation of electricity supply, new legislation will facilitate (industrial) demand side management by supporting contracts with time dependent electricity prices. This development offers new opportunities for companies providing energy flexibility in planning and operations and/or including on-site generation and storage. We have developed a multi-job, parallel machine scheduling model, including own generation and reversible power to gas technology as storage. First results look promising, but as the optimization problem is NP-hard only small instances with a short time horizon can be solved. The internship project will include researching, implementing and testing solution heuristics for this problem to make it work for real industry cases.
