Hybrid Social Solutions
Location: Manila, Philippines
About: Despite the best efforts of the electricity sector, around 20 million Filipinos currently live in unelectrified and poorly electrified areas. Without access to electricity, daily chores are more difficult, and livelihood, health, education, and security are adversely affected. As a result, tens of thousands of communities are deprived of the ability to develop economically and eventually escape poverty.
Founded in 2010, Hybrid Social Solutions, Inc. (HSSi) is an award-winning social enterprise based in Metropolitan Manila that provides rural, off-grid communities and underserved remote on-grid communities in the Philippines with sustainable access to high-quality, affordable solar technologies aimed at spurring basic economic development. We have developed strong partnerships with technical innovators for high-quality solar products that are suited to our target market and also with community partners by means of our Solar Access Program (SAP).
HSSi is founded and managed by a Princeton alumnus and former Princeton Trustee. He gained experience for many years in business, achieving great successes as Senior Partner at McKinsey & Co. and as the CEO of one of the Philippines largest real-estate development firms before pivoting into working in social enterprise, environmental conservation, and economic development work. He is keen on mentoring young aspiring social entrepreneurs!
Intern Responsibilities: HSSi will have specific projects defined, but interns may also take initiative in defining their projects. Princeton interns will be part of a larger class of interns from around the world; in 2018, HSSi hosted eight interns from a variety of backgrounds and schools in the UK, US, and the Philippines.
Interns will be based in Manila but all will have at least one visit to the field operations around the country related to their work. Depending on the nature of the project, interns may spend several weeks on field visits. These visits are excellent opportunities to connect with the true impact of development work and gain a cultural perspective.
The interns will join the Marketing Team and update marketing materials such as brochures, catalog, website and customer testimonials. The intern(s) will learn about marketing strategies under the tutelage of the Communications Manager, with guidance from the CEO, and will gain experience marketing to all the important players in a social enterprise ecosystem: high-profile investors and partners as well as the bottom-of-the-pyramid customers. They will also have the opportunity to travel to the field to work directly with locals to collect and produce customer testimonials. Experience with design, video/picture editing, and marketing would be very helpful in this role.
Program Innovation - Business Dev:
The interns will join the Program Innovation Team and will develop proposals, supporting analysis and business models for HSSi's new programs. These programs may range from partnerships with international development organizations such as UNDP or EU to new financing schemes with unique financial partners to new operational models with our field sales teams. The interns will operate under the mentorship of the Program Innovation Manager and the Director of Program and Product Innovation.
Product Innovation - Tech:
The interns will join the Product Innovation Team and will assist in developing new products through analysis of technology trends, development of technological evaluation protocols, market assessments and more. The interns will operate under the mentorship of the Product Innovation Manager and the Director of Program and Product Innovation.
The interns will join the Analytics Team and will analyze company-wide data to produce management reports for the CEO and other members of the management team to guide strategic and operational decision making. These reports may cover a wide range of topics including but not limited to sales & forecasting, sales productivity, sales conversion rates, market development, geographic trends, and inventory management. The interns will work under the guidance of Business Development and Operations Analyst and the Central Administrative Director.
