IIP Remote Program
Program Overview

The IIP Remote Program was launched in response to the Covid-19 pandemic and the impact on industries around the world including international internships abroad. We are excited to work in this new virtual landscape and understand the challenges and opportunities we face in this new climate. While these IIP options will not be the same length, the same style, or the same experience as was expected for your summer 2020 program we envision that your remote opportunities will continue to provide the career exploration you would expect from your IIP.

We know that while some organizations are able to offer remote internships, others may be faced with closures, and industry-related challenges that may make virtual work difficult. We are grateful to the IIP partners who have the ability to offer modified opportunities, and we absolutely understand the constraints that have prevented some of the employers from offering remote work opportunities.

In accepting your IIP Remote Program, you are required to adhere to University policy as stated in Rights, Rules, Responsibilities to know, understand and to respect the employer’s regulations and policies regarding confidentiality agreement to proprietary information, assignments, working hours, and professional conduct (including dress code for remote meetings), as well as to fulfill the responsibilities of your internship to the best of your abilities. Should a student fail to abide by any of the aforementioned rules and standards, consequences may include dismissal from the internship.

Qualifications

The IIP Remote Program is only available to students that were pre-selected for International Internships abroad that were canceled in light of the Covid-19 pandemic. Students that were not pre-approved for an international internship will be withdrawn from this application.

Frequently Asked Questions

Accepting your remote internship

Does the IIP Remote Program come with a financial award?

Once you have formally accepted your IIP remote internship and we have received your signed Terms & Conditions, you will receive an IIP award in the amount of $1,500 for the duration of your remote internship. We will send a follow-up e-mail regarding the IIP award timeline and process.

If I accept the remote option, will my place for the same internship be held next year?

No. If you choose to pursue this remote option, we cannot hold your place at the same organization next year. You will be eligible for an in-person IIP next year, but you will need to reapply.

How will IIP support me throughout my remote internship?

The IIP office will do our best to support you as you adapt to your virtual internship. You will be asked to complete surveys and reflections at various points in your experience to be sure that your internship is running effectively and to check-in with us about any potential issues.

In order for us to assure that your internship runs smoothly, it is imperative that you respond to these requests from the IIP office in the timeline provided. Please refer to your Terms & Conditions for details about reporting requirements for IIP Remote Program.

If I do not like the remote method and decide to cancel my internship halfway through the summer, will my spot still be held for summer 2021?

If you cancel halfway through your internship, you will not qualify for the same internship next year. You will need to go through the application and placement process again. Please refer to your Terms & Conditions for details about early program termination.

Declining and deferring your remote internship

My internship is now able to provide remote work, but I have already committed to a different summer opportunity. What are my options?

We understand that many students have already planned for their summer internships. Please know that, while we cannot guarantee the placement, IIP office will make every effort to honor your placement for summer 2021.

I am a Junior and will be a Senior in the summer 2021, do I still have the option to defer my placement to next year?

Unfortunately, you will be unable to complete your placement. In order to complete an IIP you will need to be an enrolled undergraduate Princeton student. At the time your placement would start you will be a graduated and unenrolled student.

I have not found another opportunity but I would prefer to do my internship in person next year and/or cannot accept for another reason. Will this affect my IIP status for next year?

There is no obligation to accept and you will not be penalized if you are unable to accept the internship. We have asked all of our partners to consider deferral for all of our students for summer 2021, so while we cannot guarantee the internship for next year our office will make every effort possible to hold your place.

If you are unable to accept the virtual opportunity due to accessibility or technology issues, please reach out to our office directly as we may be able to make alternative arrangements for you.

What happens to my remote internship if I decline and defer? Will someone else be offered the opportunity?

Yes. If you decline and defer your internship, the virtual option will be offered to another student whose internship was not able to offer remote work.

If I decline / defer my internship at this time, can I still include this internship on my resume?

Absolutely. To help you secure future internship and job positions, please do include your internship placement on your resume. We recommend listing the job title, organization name, and anticipated job responsibilities. You should also mention that you were unable to complete this internship due to international travel restrictions amid the COVID-19 pandemic.
