St. Mary's Mission Hospital
About: St. Mary's Mission Hospital is one of the largest private hospitals in Kenya offering a wide variety of services to diverse populations. It serves a large proportion of low income people from the surrounding slums such as Kibera, Mukuru, Njenga, Kuwinda etc. The It has become an oasis of healing in the midst of extreme hardship it currently serves about 1,200 outpatients daily, offers CCC (Comprehensive Care Centre) services to over 3,000 patients per month, conducts about 800 to 1,000 deliveries monthly, and undertakes about 500 major and 500 minor operations monthly.

Intern Responsibilities: IIP interns may work in one or more of the following areas:
  • Internal Medicine - IIP interns can be involved in either or both of two units of the hospital which are: the outpatient department and the inpatient department. In outpatient the interns will shadow the healthcare professionals in delivering such services as: Diabetic care, hypertension clinic critical care clinics for the care of HIV/AIDs Patients as well in the treatment of tropical diseases such as Malaria and Typhoid. In the Inpatient department the interns will shadow and participate in such activities as; Management of communicable diseases such as Malaria, TB, Gastroenteritis and blood transfusion for patients.
  • Obstetrics and Gynecology - In this department the IIP interns will join the team of consultants gynecologists, midwives, nurses , medical offices and clinical officers who deliver the care in the busiest department of the hospital. The unit has between 800-1000 deliveries in a month. The IIP interns will shadow in gynecology activities which include general gynecology care and operations, cervix cancer screening services and management of infertility and female genital tract cancers. In Obstetrics the students will shadow in activities which include Antenatal care clinics, Labor and Delivery services, after delivery care and follow-up clinics, HIV screening and PMTCT, vaginal delivery services, and Caesarian section delivery.
  • Pediatrics and Child Health Department - In this department the IIP interns will shadow in the delivery of care for children and treatment of all the child illnesses. The activities available for IIP interns to learn from in this hospital unit include clinics such as outpatient curative and health promotion clinic, mother and child welfare clinics, pediatrics wards rotations which has a bed capacity of 45 and a monthly service or around 200 patients, post-natal wards as well as the New Born Unit.
  • Surgery Department - The IIP interns in the surgery department have the opportunity to shadow and learn in various surgical procedures which include: general surgeries, orthopedic surgeries as well as endoscopy. The interns will also shadow in surgery outpatients where there are activities such as history taking and surgical advice and examinations to determine what surgeries the patients need. Interns will also shadow in anesthesia working with a team of disciplined anesthetists that are well trained and experienced in general and regional anesthesia, as well as resuscitation techniques.
Qualifications: IIP candidates with interests in medicine, public health, and health care services are encouraged to apply.
