From Houses to Homes

Organization Overview

From Houses to Homes is a grassroots organization that provides sustainable housing, along with access to health care and education in rural and indigenous communities around Antigua, Guatemala. The primary project was home construction replacing cornstalk shacks with a safe, secure and sustainable block home. The organization also works closely with a local school in Santa Maria de Jesus, Guatemala, a community of indigenous families that often were unable to attend school due to cost factors. Naturally, health care became a priority so the organization has a health clinic in Pastores, Guatemala that provides healthcare all of the families that live in homes built at no cost to the families. The ultimate goal is to create pathways out of poverty. During the first week, the IIP intern will participate in home building and orientation to the community and the organization's projects.

Intern Responsibilities:

Education Intern
IIP interns will have the opportunity to work closely with the school teachers, counselor, and principal along. During their time in Antigua, interns will also have the option of visiting and assisting the construction team under the supervision of the organization's masons. IIP intern(s) are expected to assist primary teacher(s) for Pre-K through 9th grade.  Academic classes are from 7:30am - 12:30pm. Assist after school activities. Intern(s) are welcome and encouraged to bring a program for the after school portion of the day that runs from 12:30-3pm. Programs can range from sports, art, music, ESL, as well as academic tutoring.
